Sycamore Tree (Platanus occidentalis)

"Winter Trees" by Jim Lyddy
The fast-growing Sycamore is found near streams and rivers and in floodplains. It tolerates flooding and soil compaction, making it an ideal tree for wet sites or urban settings, and can grow up to 130 feet high and 6 feet across in ideal conditions. The large, coarse leaves are bright green above and paler beneath. It produces flowers in late May, and fruits in October. The fruits are clustered together in single small balls that dangle from the branches throughout the winter. But the most striking feature of this tree is its bark that flakes off in plates, revealing patches of white, green or tan, giving an interesting mottled appearence to the trunk.
The photo used in today's post can also be found in our 2009 calendar!
